Intriguant

As Intriguant, Louis Quek has carved out a unique niche as an adroit electronic music producer/DJ who blends textural sounds and rhythmic patterns backed by syncopated beats and fusing the physical and spiritual realms. Finding inspiration in the “human perception of environments and spaces,” his solo releases dive into notions of loneliness, self-discovery, kinship and origins. Besides being feted for his sumptuous DJ sets, and for being part of the bi-monthly beats/electronica night, Uploading, he has also ventured into cross-genre, immersive collaborations: with visual/light artist Flex in Temporal, and with new media artist Jo Ho in Into Multiplicities, both of which are site-specific performances for festivals.

Year of Release: 2022
Intriguant proffers ‘Safe Space’, an emollient doozie which caresses the most frazzled of nerves, a standout in a compilation album (as well as a live show) featuring some of the best of home-grown electronic musicians.

Spirits Remixes

Year of Release: 2021
Spirits Remixed is a bold re-imagining of Intriguant’s 2020’s Spirits by an array of DJs and producers from here and beyond such as Japan’s Fujimoto Tetsuro, and Malaysia’s rEmPiT g0dDe$$, as well as compatriots Kin Leonn, The Analog Girl, Kiat, Halal Sol, and Bongomann.

Spirits

Year of Release: 2020
Purely instrumental except for one featuring vocals in Korean, Spirits is a contemplative exploration of the sanctity of sounds. Fuelled by retro-futuristic breakbeats, shaped 808s, imagined clubs for dancing folk, as well as Burial’s bass-heavy textures, it makes for perfect late-night listening and in the inner sanctum of one’s room.

It’s beats a-flutter and circular riffs galore in ‘For Shadow’, Intriguant’s excellent contribution to the first volume of Uploading, the compilation of songs by Singapore’s beatmakers and spin-meisters.

Kindred

Year of Release: 2019
Kindred has its roots in an intimate and personal motivation, an ode to Intriguant’s artistic evolution wherein growth is the beating heart of the narrative. A visceral celebration of pure sounds, it distils house, techno, hip-hop and drum ’n’ bass in its creative awakening.

Recluse

Year of Release: 2017
Released in 2017 to acclaim – from an audience from the USA, the UK, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, and the Philippines – Recluse is an exploration of the self, inspired by Intriguant’s discovery of empowerment in solitude. While meditative, it confronts grief and frustration. He mourns the passing of a friend in ‘You’re Here, You’re Near (feat. KATØ)’, and comes clean with his struggle with inhibitions in “Don’t Get Me Wrong (feat. OmarKENOBI)’. His debut album displays glitchy, downtempo soundscapes and features cameos by Charlie Lim, Tim De Cotta, and Ginny Bloop.

Ellipse EP

Year of Release: 2014
Featured in music rags such as The Fader, the Ellipse EP introduced to the world the nimble skills of Intriguant as a producer, adept at “fleshing out field recordings into moody soundscapes that sway between ambient techno and glitchy instrumental hip-hop.”
