Victoria Yam

Part of the Asian diasporic scene, Victoria Yam moves between worlds as easily as she slips between her two experimental electronic music projects, VIKTORIA and rEmPiT g0dDe$$. Spending her time between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, the producer, composer and DJ boldly ventures into the farthest, darkest recesses of industrial club, whipping up missives from the underground. Ever restless, she also works as music editor of the Magazine for Young Girls, an independent title highlighting female talents from Asia and diaspora communities around the world, and hosts a bi-monthly radio show featuring Asian female musical artists from around the world.

ALAM IMPIAN

Year of Release: 2022
As rEmPiT g0dDe$$, Victoria Yam goes all-rave-no-filler in this ethno-gone-futuristic track composed for Common Tonalities, an exploration of South-east Asian tuning systems and scales through modern music technologies. Her contribution, ‘Alam Impian’, named after a township in Shah Alam, is propulsive, alluring, and, yes, a little unsettling.

UNCREATED LIGHT

Year of Release: 2021
In the penumbra between creation and destruction lies the wilful muse of rEmPiT g0dDe$$. The four-track EP Uncreated Light is a cinematic evocation of a purgatory between light and darkness. “What have we become?/In a soulless state/Deprived & polluted by control,” somebody purrs, while a martial army marches to the thumps of inevitability. Gasp.

BUBBLE

Year of Release: 2020
Whose bubble is this? Nothing can stop rEmPiT g0dDe$$ from either trying to break out of it, or to prick it. Against ever-rotating synths and scuttling percussion, somebody repeats a single word, “how,” or something like that.

3NiTi

Year of Release: 2019
“Which of us comprehended the trinity?” intones rEmPiT g0dDe$$ over scratchy, ominous beats as if she’s the female version of HAL 9000 from the sci-fi classic 2001: A Space Odyssey. The chant repeats, and there is no resolution.

XPRE55

Year of Release: 2018
A hedonistic club beat anchors this alterna-ballad turned outerspace opera while a female soprano and a contralto trade vocals. It’s a shimmering world where danger meets glam, as rEmPiT g0dDe$$ takes charge.
