Koflow

Synonymous with the growth of Singaporean hip-hop, KoFlow has stood tall as a staunch advocate of the genre since the early 2000s. Since making his mark in turntablism by winning the Singapore DMC Championship in 2003, he has worn many hats as an ace selector, an events promoter behind his Solid Gold brand, and an experimental producer specialising in bass-heavy beats. The first Singaporean hip-hop act to headline a concert at The Esplanade, the World DMC finalist has shared the same stage with international artists such as Ghostface Killah and Raekwon of the Wu-Tang Clan, NAS, Mariah Carey and Kanye West.

GREY

Year of Release: 2023
KoFlow takes off on a gravity-defying trajectory into the experimental ‘Grey Zone’, that sweet spot between knowing and not knowing – the actualisation of the artist’s ceaseless journey of learning and discovering, and always verging on failure. Bravely embracing the risks of adventure, the Grey EP charts the course where the past, the present and the future intersect, revealing a sonic galaxy full of possibilities. The listener is buoyed on a sea of liquefied micro-beats, from the skittering opener ‘Inner Space’, before it segues into the quasi-Orientalia of ‘Wind from the East’ and the R&B-flavoured balladeering of ‘I Don’t Care’, featuring the lissom, modulated vocals of Singaporean-American chanteuse Zora Smith. Things take a breather with the come-down Arcadia of ‘Stay With Me’ and the expansive ripples of ‘Positive Behaviour’, before the wanderlust reaches the luxurious, staccato arpeggios of ‘Wanna’.

Tangent — Koflow & David Loke Kai Yuan

Year of Release: 2021
The norm-breaking debut of the Tangent Moves collective, this tag-team EP features a blend of two worlds – between hip-hop turntablist-producer, KoFlow, and classical violinist, David Loke Kai Yuan. They create a vibe that’s effortlessly synchronised, as they pursue boom bap, folk and psychedelic funk.

Metem

Year of Release: 2020
Named after metempsychosis, meaning the transmigration of the soul from one body to another, Metem translates this to refer to the power of hip-hop. KoFlow ushers listeners into a voyage of versatility and adaptation: from trap-fuelled barrages (‘Hear Me Coming’) and saccharine future bass detours (‘I’m Gonna Miss You’) to rap onslaughts (‘Dreamers’) and minimal bass bangers (‘This Shite Hot’).

Flow

Year of Release: 2017
How do you tell the life story of a hip-hop legend? Through the visceral conduit that is his music, naturally. Flow is an audial documentary on the Singaporean pioneer, translating his life and storied career – from troubled adolescence to becoming a turntablism champion – into conceptual set pieces. KoFlow rallied guest artistes, such as vocalist Vandetta and rapper ShiGGa Shay, who complemented his wizardry on the decks.
